It was another Glorious Catamount Day at the 48th Annual Ronnie McClurg/Dalton Rotary Invitational. The sun was shining bright as our Girls’ Team took home the Championship and the Boys’ Team took 2nd place. I first want to thank the Rotarians and everything they do for this event each year. The Rotary Club of Dalton does a first-class job of supporting our student-athletes. Bruce Satterfield and Ronnie McClurg do an amazing job of getting everything put together behind the scenes. A special thank you also goes to our Administration at Dalton High School (Stephanie Hungerpiller, Jeff McKinney, Missy McKinney, Jessica Ashlock, Chris Anderson, and Matt Mederios) for their support of the Dalton Track & Field program, even stepping in to help out with some events today. We had a big turnout of student volunteers this year, and I’d like to give a special thank you to Larry Tripp for organizing all the volunteers from our clubs on campus. Another big thank you goes out to all our track parents who volunteered to make today so special. Also, a little over a year ago I took a crazy design for a new podium to Davin Norton who teaches our Engineering class at Dalton High School. Throughout the process even during a pandemic, he never said no to me and produced one of the nicest podiums I’ve seen just in time for this event. In addition, I want to thank Dr. Joey Wills for designing and producing the sign for the podium. We have some of the finest teachers in the State of Georgia who go above and beyond for our students at Dalton High School. Last but not least, thank you to our Dalton Track and Field Coaching staff (Karen Galyon, Cole Bennett, Carl Chenard, and Adam Martinez) who pour into these athletes every day.
Our athletes did an amazing job today with a lot of season bests. On the girls’ side, Meg Coleman took home MVP honors in the running events as she scored a meet-high in points with three first-place finishes and a second-place finish. Jocelyn Montalvo took home the MVP honors in the field events as she scored 11 points with a first-place finish in the shot put. Other strong performances for the girls came from Emma Hefner, Casey Mashburn, Andrea Magana, Betsy Perez, Sirena Pridgen, Odajah Mitchell, Vyktori Clark, Taejanae Jones, Claire Archer, Mary Jean Barsch, Kemara Washington, Morgan Bellflower, Kelly Mashburn, Jazmin Rodriguez, Lashay Witherow, and Giselle Dominguez. On the boys’ side, Luke Blanchard, Warner Ross, Ethan Evans, Victor Soria, Manuel Apodaca, Jose Beltran, Eddie Ortiz, Simon McKeehan, Andre Avila, Grant Halverson, Makyleri Waire, and Bentley Myers all had their names called on the podium. Charlie Patrick had a great day on the discus as he took home 1st place and had a podium finish on the shot put as well.
Next week the Catamounts head to Southeast High School on Tuesday and finish up the week on Thursday with our third home meet of the year against North Murray High School. #FEEDTHECATS #GBR
