In Macon, four wrestlers from Dalton moved closer to a state title. All four won two matches during the first day of the tournament on Thursday, putting them in the championship semifinals.
Matthew Tankersley (113 pounds), Sergio Alvarez (132 pounds), Malik Coleman (152 pounds), and Joseph Reese (182 pounds) all went 2-0. Each won their first matches via pin. Tankersley and Alvarez continued to cruise in the quarterfinals with major decision wins while Coleman and Reese gutted out close decision wins.
Coleman was trailing 2-0 with under 30 seconds to go against Evan Gianfala of Creekview High School when he got a takedown and a near fall, good for five points and the win. Reese was tied with Thomas Jackson of Dunwoody going into the third period. Reese picked up one point when Jackson was called for stalling, then sealed the match with a takedown.
Also, Ethan Carroll (120) and Jaxon Wells (126) are alive in the consolation bracket after going 1-1 on Thursday. They can wrestle back to finish as high as third. Wells won his first round match by pin before falling in the quarterfinals. Carroll dropped his first match but came back to win a 10-9 decision in his first round consolation match.
